The United States Peace Corps is a volunteer program run by the U.S. government that sends young Americans abroad to assist developing countries with their development needs. Established in 1961, it aims to promote world peace and friendship by fulfilling three main goals: helping the host country meet its needs for trained volunteers; promoting cultural exchange and understanding among people of the United States and the host country; and helping promote a better understanding of Americans on the part of the peoples served. Volunteers work in various sectors including education, health, agriculture, and the environment, committing to serve for 27 months. The program is open to U.S. citizens aged 18-29 (30 for college graduates) who have a passion for service, cultural understanding, and a desire to make a positive impact in the world.
